Healing in the Heart of the Island – Stories from the Mobile Health Clinic

When Mariam went into labor in a remote village in Pemba, there was no clinic nearby and no doctor to help. Thankfully, Teach for Zanzibar’s Mobile Health Clinic had visited her village the week before, providing prenatal advice and distributing safe delivery kits. That knowledge, along with support from a trained local health worker, helped her bring a healthy baby girl into the world.

This is the quiet, life-saving work that TFZ does across the islands of Zanzibar.

Our Community Health & Wellness Initiative is designed to bridge the healthcare gap in rural and underserved areas. From malaria screenings and maternal health services to health education and chronic illness management, our mobile teams reach where most clinics can’t. Often traveling by boat, motorbike, or foot, our health workers bring not only medicine but also dignity and hope.

In 2024 alone, we provided care to over 7,500 individuals—many of whom had never received professional medical attention before. Our work goes beyond treatment. We host health workshops that teach families about hygiene, nutrition, and disease prevention. We also train local volunteers, creating sustainable solutions from within the community.

For Mariam and many others, our presence means more than medicine—it means someone cares, someone shows up, and someone believes that access to healthcare should never depend on where you live.

Help us continue this mission. Sponsor a health visit or partner with us to reach even more families in need.
